Last week, we received a question from one of our users, asking about the difference between barcodes and serial numbers. While this question looks simple enough, we could see why there could be some confusion.
Barcodes, by definition, are a series of characters, number or letters, that has been translated into a series of bars.
These bars can then be read by a barcode scanner, so that you can find the associated item faster. This makes selling them much faster.
Typically, products that you buy from your suppliers will automatically have a barcode, and thus, you just need to type that barcode into the barcode field when you edit the product in Imonggo. And because you have added the barcode in the barcode field, that product would automatically be added in the Store when you scan that product’s barcode.
Barcodes in Imonggo
You may or may not add a barcode to your products in Imonggo. It is optional.
If the product you are selling already has a barcode, then just type or scan the barcode into the barcode field.
If the product you are selling do not have a barcode yet, you can just type a string of numbers here and use the barcode printing feature to print a barcode that you can scan with your barcode scanner.
Serial numbers in Imonggo
The serial number feature is a new addition to Imonggo. It is an optional feature for businesses that need tracking of every individual piece inventory on a single item or SKU.
If barcodes are used to find the item so you can quickly add them to the sales invoices, the serial number is used to indicate what piece of that item you are selling. Every item will have two codes on the label–one barcode, and one serial number.
For example, here is the real label of an iPad:
The one highlighted in red is the SKU barcode, and the one highlighted in green is the serial number.
If a customer comes up to the counter and wants to purchase a PS4, you would want to scan the barcode (red box) to quickly add the PS4 to the invoice.
But you have 10 of the PS4 in stock in your Store. How will the cashier know which of the 10 the customer wants to take home? Simple. The cashier just needs to use the serial number (green box) to find the correct one:
The serial number will be printed on the invoice, and can then be used by the cashier later on if the customer files a warranty claim.
