Pokémon GO has become one of the most viral mobile applications of all time, surpassing Tinder in total app installs, Twitter in daily active users and Facebook in user engagement time. As the mobile game’s global popularity continues to grow, businesses are interested in capitalising on its success.
One upcoming opportunity for businesses is called sponsored locations, which will allow businesses to encourage players to visit their stores. Niantic, which developed Pokémon GO in partnership with Nintendo, said sponsored locations will charge businesses on a cost-per-visit basis, similar to the cost-per-click model common in online advertising.
But you don’t have to wait for sponsored locations because there are already a few ways for your business to capitalise on Pokémon GO today.
In an article published by the New York Post, L’inizio Pizza Bar in Queens, increased business by 75% just after purchasing a $10 in-game power-up called a Lure Module that attracts Pokémon to a single location. Use Lures to attract Pokémon, and the customers collecting them, to your business.
Pokémon GO is demanding on cellphone batteries. Setting up a charging station will help keep customers long enough to make a sale, but not long enough to disrupt operations.
While more businesses are attempting to drive players to their premises, others have found that the increased footfall does not necessarily translate to increased sales. When encouraging players to visit your store, carefully plan in-store promotions to help guarantee a sale – rather than loitering. Perhaps you can create Pokemon-themed drinks? Or you can sell souvenirs. Make sure that you also take the customers’ contact details so you can invite them back.
It is difficult to project how long Pokémon GO will remain a viral success. However, that should not stop businesses from engaging with new customers by sharing their love for the game.
